numbering for invoices

I am trying to create a template for invioces which I want to consecutively
auto number with an invoice number, i.e. the first invoice would be 1000, the
next would be 1001... etc. I can't figure out the field to insert that would
give me this. If this can't be done, would the next best thing be to keep
all the invoices in one file and use page numbering?
