Number of Files or Size of web "Front Page could not Parse"

G

Guest

Is there a limit on the size of a web or number of files in FP 2002?
Mine is 1 GB with 44,000 files in 1166 folders.
When I upload - my "Titles" Text is missing at the top.
http://www.beamalarm.com/Travel.htm
When I upload I get message
" The server sent a response that Front page could not parse"
My Webserver is saying that Front page cant handle this many files.
My webserver is using Unix server & said it might work better on a Windows
Server ???
Any help would be appreciated.
I cant find any size info in any searches.

No, there is no limit.

Go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and download a copy of
FP cleaner.
Run the Functions that:
Clear the FrontPage Temporary files.
Clear the Cache(*.web) files.

When it's done open your web and click Tools > Recalculate Hyperlinks.
It might take quite a while with a web that size.

When it's done republish your problem pages.

I have done what you said & it did take awhile.
When you say republish your problem pages ,which is all of them.
How is that done? Do you mean republish the entire website as each page is
missing the titles. It takes 8.5 hours to do that. When I do "publish web" it
does not change anything as it thinks nothing has changed. I dont know how to
tell it to update individual pages that do not have a check next to it.

I have been copying a page & saving it under a different name & adding the
photos.
When I originally set it up I stumbled thru it. I dont know the answers to
where the titles are located or how they are applied. I started saving
each page again & it is putting the tiles back in. But this will take forever
to do each one individually. I wasnt sure if that was what you meant by
republishing the pages again. I dont know how they got disconnected & I
thought there was somewhere to set it up for all the pages.

One thing that can be causing problems is that you have spaces in file names
like this:
http://www.beamalarm.com/2006 Foretravel Phoenix.htm

Each %20 that you see represents a space.
The problem is, spaces in file names break links in a browser and can
prevent pages or images from displaying properly.

Here's the easy part:
Jim Cheshire, a MSFT programmer has created a Free FrontPage add-in named
Space Replacer that will search your web and replace the spaces in file
names.
I recommend you use either a dash - or an underscore_ to replace the
spaces.

Now here's the hard part:
You'll basically need to republish your "entire" website after it's done.

That was very helpful, I will try that.. It takes 8.5 hours to republish. How
do the spaces get there to begin with? When I name a file I dont use any
spaces. Is it done by FP & if so can I do anything to stop it or do I have to
run this program periodically.

S

Steve Easton

It should be in the Tools dropdown on the FrontPage Toolbar.

FP names a file exactly the way you create the name.
However if you have imported files created by another program, and that
program puts spaces in file names, FP will import them with the spaces.

As for the 8.5 hours, there's a function in FrontPage to publish "changed
pages only"
You should be able to find it in Tools > Site Settings.

However, at any rate this is something you really need to do.

As a minor note if you would like to create a hit counter image that more
closely matches your site, here's a little utility that will make one:
http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/HitMeFP.htm

Set the image you create as the "Custom" image when adding or editing a hit
counter.

I found where it was hiding & ran it but it ran into an error & now appears
to be stuck after 20 minutes of waiting. I closed it & reran it & now it
appears to be stuck again. Any ideas?

Run the FP Cleaner function that clears the Cache(*.web) files and the
FrontPage Temporary files and the run Space Replacer again.

Also open the web site in FP but don't open any pages.
Just run Space Replacer.

Thank You, I tried it 3 times & it continues to stop & show an error
-2147467259 (80004005) at a different file. Message says "Server Error"
cannot rename "file name" to "JimcoTempFolder" destination already exists .
When I hit OK another Runtime error 440 Automation error message comes up.
Tried deleting Jimcotemp folder & no help.

S

Stefan B Rusynko

That is telling you that you already have a file named "file_name" so it can't rename "file name" (whatever the real name was) to
that name
- rename one of them to something else

There is no limit to the number of files that FrontPage can manage,
however some systems do have limits, especially web servers that
impose time limitations on processing web requests. This will include
the "Recalculate Hyperlinks" command (seen as "Processing Web
Updates") on the server that automatically follows every publish. A
web of the size you have may be too big for the server.
It would be a good idea to break the web into subwebs, where each
subweb can be published individually, and thus considerably reduce the
processing load on the server.

Note that since a subweb is an independent web, you will have to
create and apply navigation, themes, include files, shared borders,
DWTs for each subweb.

It appears to be a .cnt file. I close FP, delete the file, run FP cleaner &
start FP again. I run "Space Relacer" again & I get another file. I do the
proceedure again but it stops running after the error. It looks like it is
goingto continue but 20 minutes later I can see it isnt going any further. I
dont think Space replacer knows what to do next if it encounters the error.

You may be right about the Server. Does it make any difference if the server
is Unix or Windows based? Can you direct me to some site that explains how I
would break this site into subwebs without causing me grief? Also can you
tell me if http://beamalarm.com/pacifictrailerclub/index.htm is a subweb? I
thought it was but it publishes along with all the rest. I dont think I
fully understand how subwebs works & GOOGLE didnt help. Thanks

The server type makes no difference. What appears (from personal
experience) to make a difference are:

Server Load - How may websites are on the server, and how busy are
they?

Day of week and Time of day - When I had this problem (with a web
containing 120pages, 2MBytes) I found publishing at 5AM GMT on Sunday
morning worked, any other day/time failed. I suspect the server was
less busy at this time. A server upgrade cured the problem totally.

Upload connection speed - the faster the better, but the server load
is much more significant.

To create a subweb, right click on a folder and choose "convert to
web", and agree to the warnings. How much grief it causes depends on
how your web is structured. If you use FrontPage navigation, include
pages, shared borders or DWTs - these will have to be created for the
subwebs and navigation edited for the root web. These components will
not work over a subweb boundary. Similarly, any database connections
may have to be reconfigured in the subwebs.
