Number of controls on a form

I use A 2003

===

I know this is a very relative question, but is there any rule of thumb
about the number of controls on a form?

A sub question is then should I move to subform(s) to take the load off the
main form when I reach the crtical mass of having too many controls on the
main form?

Thank you

There is no rule of thumb on this - it's a matter of how much you want to
cram on the form itself for visual reasons.

As the only user that is no issue, but when I let Access check the form,
Access suggests I have too many controls

I was just curious

In A2002, you are limited to about 768 Controls on the Form. I think A2003
is the same. Type "specifications" in your Access Help search and you
should get all sorts of limits.

OTOH, the number of Fields / Columns in a Table or a Query is max. 255 (and
that's about 200 too many), so 768 Controls should generally be enough. A
normal user won't be able to absorb a lot of data displayed on the screen
simultaneously so there is no point in displaying too much data at the same
time.

I generally use Subforms only to display data of child Records in a
Many-to-One relationship to the current Record on the Main Form.

Thank you

I am going make a hard copy of your observations

I have a db I both use and learn with daily, but it is getting so top heavy
I want to clean it up

The problem is picking what to nuke, because thanks to Newsgroups, I have so
many nifty controls :)

It is amazing what one can do with Access!

Peace...
