number input error

All of a sudden whenever I input a number in any workbook in any column that
number is 100th of the input number. e.g. if I input 6 the number shown is
0.06, if 60 it shows 0.6. I have tried formatting the columns but it does not
help to change this effect. It applies to all work books even those unopened
for a few months.

Your options are set to assume that whenever you type a number with no
decimal point, then the decimal point should be inserted before last two
digits. Either explicitly type the decimal point for input numbers, or
(versions prior to 2007) go to Tools|Options|Edit and uncheck "Fixed decimal
Places". I do not know the 2007 menu structure, but Help for "Fixed decimal
Places" should get you there (in 2003 you would want the Help topic "Enter
data in worksheet cells", subtopic "Enter numbers with a fixed number of
decimal places or trailing zeros").
