Number in Parenthesis

When I select calendar, in the upper left of the screen is the word
"calendar" with a green check in the box in front of it, and behind it is
Parenthesis with a number in it [ie. (6)]. What is that number indicating?

For the inbox I know it is unread messages. Just can't figure the calendar
number out.

Right click the folder, select advanced find, set the criteria to items that are unread.
