ntmsapi.dll and boot failure

I ran check disc and it apparantly deleted ntmsapi.dll as an "orphan".

When I try to reboot XP, I get a red X and a message saying that the
ntmsapi.dll componenet is missing. Nothing happens after that and I have to
unplug the PC to try a re.boot.

I tried the "use last good configuration" option, no go. After running
through the various files, I got the same message and a freeze-up.

I don't even know what this dll relates to so I don't think I can use safe
mode to bypass loading any application it uses.

If I simply re-install XP, I'll loose all my files.

Thanks for any help provided.

I would try Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" without quotes
and hit Enter.

You will need your CD.

If your CD does not incorporate the SP2 update because it dates from
2004 or earlier come back for further advice.

Thanks Gerry.

I asume I need to boot in safe mode and select c:\ prompt so I can type in
the command? (Start and Run are Window commands and I can't get that far)
Or, try getting to Start and Run from Safe mode? Also, I don't know if I
can lay my hands on the CD.

I do not think you need to go to safe mode. System File Checker
(Sfc.exe) is a command-line utility.

Thanks Gerry, I'll let you know tomorrow how I fared.

I 'm hoping I won't need the CD and that the file can be restored from the
cache.
