NTLDR: Couldn't open drive...

Josh

After I bought a new computer, I tried to set up my old
computer for my roommate. I took everything out that I'd
added to it (voodoo3 card, cd-rw drive, new hard drive)
and hooked everything back up the way it used to be. It's
a Compaq Presario 5000T.

Now, when it boots, I get this error.

Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
NTLDR: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition
(1)

Pressing any key just causes it to reboot. I have tried
switching the IDE cables around to just about every
possible combination, and while when I switch them, it'll
say ''The following configuration has been updated: blah
blah'', it just goes from that back to the NTLDR error.

The computer originally had WinME on it, a few months
before I stopped using the hard drive I put a fresh,
formatted install of XP Pro on it. I've tried to reinstall
XP before and after fdisk, both scenarios it will continue
fine until the point where the installation reboots the
computer, then it goes back to the NTLDR error. I've tried
a number of different BIOS settings, boot orders, and the
defaults, but still, no luck.

I tried changing out the HD to a known good hard drive.
Same error.

I'm baffled. Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you tried using the original restore CD's or hard drive restore files?
It would be best for the system to be fresh for your room mate. He can then
upgrade to XP from Me.
The below link is for XP, but it may help.

Yes, I have tried that, I can install from the xp cd fine,
up until the point where it has to restart to continue the
install, then I go right back to the NTLDR error.

I tried this, and got Cannot find the file specified

I took a floppy disk and copied versions of ntldr,
ntdetect.com, boot.ini, and config.sys from a working
version of XP, and copied them to C:, and got the same
error when I tried to boot
