NTFS Formatted 8GB USB key

J

Justin

I have an 8GB USB key formatted to NTFS. Everytime I right click and
hit eject on XP it tells me htere are files being used, when in fact
there aren't.
The reason I have the drive formatted to NTFS is the fact I have to go
between PCs and Macs - I use NTFS-3G via MacFUSE to access the drive.
Hence, exFAT/FAT64 is not an option. I routinely move files larter than
4GB, hence FAT32 is also not an option. If I just pull the drive out
and ignore the message, I run the risk of corrupting the volume - which
has happened a few times.

Or try USBDiskEjector

With the USB key in the machine you need to check two things.

1. Right click on Recycle Bin. Click Properties. Ensure that the settings
are for each drive individually. Click Apply. Click the drive identified
for the USB drive. Ensure that the recycle bin is set to 0 click Apply.
Exit out and then go back into Recycle bin properties. Check the box to
turn off the recycle bin for that drive. Every time the drive is plugged in
ensure that it is physically plugged into the same port.

2. Right click My Computer, click Manage, Click Device Manager. In the
Disk drives section find your USB disk. Right click on it and then
Properties then Policies tab. Ensure that Write caching and Safe Removal,
Optimize of quick removal is checked. Click OK.

See if this helps the removal problem.

Ah ha...
I will try when I get home.

See? This is nice because somebody answered my question and didn't
question why I was doing what I was doing.

Nice. I always wonder why my USB disk drives always do that and Unlocker
showed nothing! I will have to try this. I did check for write caching
and any files in used with Unlocker in the past. Would Unlocker show
Recycle Bin too if it was in used?

Since I don't use unlocker, I have no idea what it will show. I do know
that if either are not set correctly and a file is deleted on the USB device
it may be locked and can't be removed. That is one issue with NTFS
formatted USB keydrives I have had.

Hmm. Well, I never saw anything related to Recycle Bin for NTFS USB
drives (HDDs too) with Unlocker so maybe it doesn't know.

If you have some type of packet writing CD / DVD software (aka InCD o
Roxio's Drag to Disk) these can sometime consider the USB drive a RW
disk.

Hmm, I only had old Easy CD Creator and Nero 5. But I don't remember
installing those features.

I just tried again. Nothing shows in Unlocker, Process Explorer, etc. I
did notice System Resource was enabled for it so I turned it off for
this drive, but that did not help. Here is a screen shot Windows XP Pro.
SP3 denied me to do the safety removal:

InCD is "usually" a separate install. Roxio's Easy CD Creator will
install its "Drag to Disk" / DirectCD automatically.

Ah. I remember disabling the annoying DirectCD in Adaptec (not Roxio
before Adaptec got bought) Easy CD Creator program.
