Sorry all I need to start from scratch on this

1) Have a boot up loop and wont go past XP page
2) Cant system restore
3) wont let me repair with the XP disc
2) new HD with winxp wont recognise the old one as a slave and says to
reformat
(tried disabling the slave in BIOS, no good)
3) Tried Knoppix....no luck there???
4) tested the HD its apparently ok
5) tested the RAM ok too
6) Asked Microsoft for help, they want $50 before they will discuss(#$%&!) and
then they wont gaurantee a fix
7) tried a DOS boot disk...
8) created a quickboot disk with XXCOPY16..good boot disc but wont start the
problem HD

is this a lost cause??

The Stop 0x24 message indicates that a problem occurred within
Ntfs.sys, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to
NTFS file system drives.

What happens when you try? Any error messages (quote text if yes)?

With what did you test it? A diagnostic utility from the hard drive
mftr.? Did you do a thorough test?

Other questions so we can focus the troubleshooting:

1. What is your end goal? To retrieve data or to use the hard drive?
2. Did you try the hard drive on a different motherboard connector in
your machine?
3. Did you try a different hard drive on the original motherboard
connector in your machine?
4. Did you try the problem hard drive in a different computer?
5. What are the specs on this computer? Age, OEM, processor, etc.
6. Have you swapped out the power supply for a known-working one yet?

comp is a 2 yr old 3gig pentium4 1024ddr ram
I cant reboot with the HD and the XP disc so the fixes from Carey are no good
when it gets to the restore/reinstall from the disc both stop and show the
error.
I have tried the HD in other comps, same response
Power supply is ok, same mother board runs with new HD with no errors or
issues
have tried both connectors no difference.

I would like to retrieve the personal files but if there is no known fix
then will just lose it all and reformat the drive, shame as there are lots of
photos of my kids growing up on the drive.

The important and relevant bit of information in this is that you've
tried the hard drive in another computer with the same response. This
tells you that there is nothing wrong with your original computer's
hardware. Even though you say you already tested the drive, you didn't
say with what. You said you tried to get data off with Knoppix, but
didn't say what happened. So I can't tell if the hard drive itself is
faulty or it's just Windows. It may be that the partitions are just
messed up so badly that even Knoppix can't retrieve the data.

If the latter is the case, you can try getting the data by using
commercially available (or freeware) data recovery software. I use Easy
Recovery Pro, but it is expensive. I've heard good things about
R-Studio and there are some freeware programs others have used. Here
are a few links:

http://www3.telus.net/mikebike/RESTORATION.html
PCInspector File Recovery -
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/welcome.htm
Executive Software “Undelete†-
http://www.execsoft.com/undelete/undelete.asp
Recover and Restore Deleted Files (Line 36) -
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

These programs require the hard drive to be physically healthy. You may
want to check around and see if any of the professional computer repair
shops in your area do data recovery and if so, take the drive to them.

If data recovery software doesn't work and/or the drive is really faulty
(not just the file system), the only way to get data off (and you
should stop fooling around with it *now* if you want to do this) is to
send it to a professional data recovery firm. I prefer DriveSavers
(www.drivesavers.com) but there are others such as Ontrack and Seagate
Data Recovery. These firms' services are not inexpensive, but only you
can determine the value of your data.

I had this very same thing happen to me a couple of years ago. I ended up
using NTFSDOS (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/NtfsDos.html) to copy
off the critical data files I wanted to save and then reformatted and
reinstalled XP. Got no help from MS, Dell, or this Newsgroup.

I believe this problem is caused by an error in the HD NTFS volume (file
system) that causes ntfs.sys itself to crash which is why the XP Repair Disk
won't work. I was hoping the MS would have fixed this by XP-SP2. Today if
this happened to me again, I would run SPINRITE V6 (addresses bad sector
issues) and then I would try the WINDOWS ULTIMATE BOOT CD
(http://www.ubcd4win.com/) or the ULTIMATE BOOT CD
(http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/). There are a number of recovery tools on
these CDs. Good Luck.

Best way to handle this is to have a full and complete backup such as
provided by a drive imaging program.

Brilliant solution! Too bad you didn't tell the OP *before* he developed the
problem. Now, do you have any other "solutions"? Or do you just like to see
your name in print?

From a Wintard helping another Wintard with his Windoze Problem:
"You might also want to try one of the numerous EXCELLENT
registry cleaners, and perhaps a ram washer."

Thanks nonstop

Its at the stage now where I cant even plug in the HD as a slave, just
having it connected throws up the error so I guess its a lesson learned and I
will backup my current HD

I created the ultimate boot disk and it didnt work either
I ran a registry cleaner.
I think Ill investigate other operating systems, im starting to believe that
MS uses thes forums to fix the F*#$% ups in its system but only when it suits
them, im old enough to remember when you could report a problem and they
would be concerned. Now they are more interested in collecting my $50 than
helping.
