NTbackup won´t start

I recently swapped out one of my harddrives and since then NTbackup won´t
start. It doesn´t give any error message at all and there is no entries in
the eventlogs. The only indication that the program actually executes is
that the application window draws its border just before it poofs. But it
gets weirder... Today I installed Acronis TrueImage 9 and guess what
happened when I tried to start the backup process - poof again.
Has anyone experienced anything remotely close to this?

In detail, all I did was this (I run XP professional SP2 with all the latest
updates):
1. Connected the new harddisk
2. Powered up, partitioned the new drive using Partition Magic 7
3. Copied all my data from the old disk to the new one
4. Removed the old disk
5. Reassigned the drive letters to resemble the structure I had on the old
disk

Please note that this drive (and the one it replaced) just contains data, no
system files. That is except for the folders System Volume Information and
RECYCLER.

It feels like a major drag having to reinstall XP over this little flaw, but
I really need to be able to backup my data, so...
Any ideas?

/Fredrik

Try running System File Checker to see if it fixes any corrupt system files.
From Windows pop the XP CD into the drive and exit the Installer screen if
it opens. go to Start->Run and type the following and click OK:
SFC /SCANNOW

Let System File Checker (SFC) run to completion. Remove the CD and reboot.
Unfortunately SFC doesn't inform you of what it might have fixes, if
anything, but it is a logical first start before going to a Repair Install.

Ok, tried the SFC tool but unfortunatly to no avail. I guess I have to look
into the Repair Install process.
Thanks for the tip, though.

Before you do that, try running chkdsk c: /f to allow chkdsk to fix any
errors. Then try the backup program again. Also run chkdsk, with the /f
option, on the drive where you are intending to store the backup.

This is just so strange. I ran chkdsk on all my drives and started Backup.
And it worked! I thought that it was too good to be true so I closed it and
started it again and there was the usual poof...
After some testing it seems it can be started from the command prompt using
the /? switch, but as soon as I close the help the program disappears again.

For the record I´m using Diskeeper 9 professional. Not that I think it has
anything to do with the problem, but...
