ntbackup and archive bit on Win XP machines

T

titanic panic

Server running Win2k SP4 backs up some files on an XP SP2 box over a mapped
drive.

Our Win2k server has a tape drive that backs up files over a mapped drive to
a Windows XP SP2 machine that scans critical hardcopy files. When ntbackup
runs a full backup it clears the archive bit just fine on itself and on
other Windows 2000 machines (that are also being backed up over mapped
drives), but it will not clear the archive bit on the single Windows XP
machine.

Hopefully this problem isn't too obscure and someone can provide some
insight on forcing ntbackup to clear the archive bit on the XP boxes.

Are you sure that the security settings are set so that the backup process
has read/write permissions to the files on the XP machine? If you created a
share and didn't modify the share permissions, then you simply gave everyone
read access. You'll need to change that. In order for the backup to change
the archive attribute, it needs to at least have modify permissions on the
file.

Not a problem... XP changed the default security settings for shares. With
2000, creating a share and not modifying the permissions, gave everyone full
access (granted file and directory permissions were still in effect), but...
