NT Workstations not logged on

G

Gerald Clarke

I forgot to mention, we had tried to just take the NT PDC
offline, and install the W2K server de-novo with AD, but
then the NT workstations are not finding the Domain - we
really do not need the old NT4.0 Server, but if we can
make it a BDC for the W2K, all the better (we have less
than 25 computers in our office)
THanks for the help

Gerald,

That is because you have created a new domain. When you removed the WINNT
4.0 PDC and installed a WIN2000 DC you created a new domain. It is very
possible that they have the same name ( yourcompany.com or whatever ) but
they are indeed two very different domains . You will need to add each
computer account to the new domain. I assume that this process is known to
you?

However, that may not be necessary. If you simply took the PDC off-line ( I
assume that this means that you simply unplugged it from the network? ) you
might be able to plug it back in. This depends on a number of factors.

Might I ask you what you did exactly, step-by-step? This would be so that
we can have a better picture of what is going on. There seems to be a lot
of confusion here.

You can not, I repeat, you can not take a WINNT 4.0 PDC and make it a member
of any other domain ( same goes for any WINNT 4.0 BDC ) without completely
wiping out that computer and starting over. I am not sure that I follow the
logic for what you did. But, what is done is done.

Also, in WIN2000 the concept of Primary Domain Controller and Backup Domain
Controller does not exist. You simply have a Domain Controller. Things
have changed significantly in this aspect. It is a completely different
world....
