NT 4 pdc and Win2000 AD

Hello,

I have this problem:

I have 1 domain with 1 NT PDC and 1 Win2000 member server. The NT4
machine (hardware to old to upgrade to w2k) is running exchange 5.5
and is doing account validation.

I have to "move" exchange 5.5 from the nt4 pdc onto the w2000 member
server. The w2k server must also become a Domain Controller. The idea
is that the NT4 machine is put off.

If i'm right you cannot have a w2k dc and a nt4 pdc in the same
domain, but reinstalling "this or that" is not an option...

somebody knows how to do this ?

The things in my head:

I install exchange 5.5 on the w2k member server as a second server in
the site, than move the mailboxes, remove the first server from the
site (the NT4 PDC), put the nt server of, promote the w2k server to a
DC, create the useraccounts and "link" the new useraccounts to the
moved mailboxes (but how ?)...

But, i have no idea if this works, my feeling say's it doesn't work...

Please help, my boss is already looking for his gun...

Thanks, Peter

Man I had to do this last year. It is not difficult. Let
me try to find my documentation on it. I don't have it
here at the office, but I think I have it at home.

You can email at the address above.

If possible you can load NT 4 on the new server as a BDC. Promote it to the
PDC, the upgrade it to Windows 2000. Then move exchange over.

why can you just upgrade the nt4 pdc to 2000 server and
then make it a server member? there should be a very good
migration tool from ms, possible included on your server
version cd-rom.

Can't upgrade because NT4 PDC has got P90 CPU and way to little HD
space. Besides, when you upgrade the PDC it will become a W2K DC (i
suppose) and i don't think you can downgrade a DC to a member
server...?!
