notification area

Using Windows XP Professional,
problems with notification area, only some icons display,
doesn't amtter what hide/unhide settings are, items like
power monitor, safely remove hardware, volume control do
not display unless acivated by some other action and then
they do display. Have tried resetting defaults and
switching off hide icons, neither makes a difference.
Some like network connections, clock always display

Any ideas
