nothing on desktop works - please help

I had the unfortunate mishap of being infected with some
adware this morning (apropose.exe, yercactu.exe,
auto_update.exe). I removed them with Spybot and Adaware
but apparenly my system was corrupted or something.

When I double click on a folder on the desktop or right
click to explore (including my computer...) explorer.exe
shoots up to 100% of my CPU indefintely. The folder can
not be opened or explored. Also, certain file types
like .wmv will not launch and application and other things
like the control panel will not open from the start menu.
So only certain things work on my computer like AOL and
Explorer - luckily so I can type this!

I tried system restoring to several points but every time
it failed.

Any idea what can be corrupt and how I can fix it?

I was able to run Norton Antivirus Professional, as I can
still access most programs. It didn't find anything. Does
it matter if I do that before I boot? I didn't see an
option in the latest version to create a boot floppy.

More details... My system works fine in safe mode. Also, I
booted with chckdsk and tried turning off all the services
in msconfig and that didn't effect anything. Also tried it
with all services one to no avail.

I'll pick up a copy of SystemWorks in hopes that solves my
problem but if you have any more advice please do post :)

Thanks!

I just tried Norton Win Doctor and Disk Doctor. Still,
clicking on anything on the desktop makes explorer.exe
take up 100% of the CPU. It's looking like I'm going to
have to reinstall the OS. Any other ideas?
