Sometimes after I start XP home and select my profile, I can double click an
application and I get the hour glass, then nothing. Sometimes if I wait 5
minutes, the application will start, and sometimes not. Then when I try to
log off, it won't let me, or it takes a long time and then it will kick in.
I've run virus scan, Adaware, Spybot, etc and everything seems clean. Any
ideas on what's going on?
Some programs can be as bad as a virus for annoying. You might take and use
Task manager
status bar->right click->task manager
Then cycle thru the tab stop [1st 2] and see what's running. 2nd tab stop is
more accurate than the 1st, but it's also more confusing unless you know the
names of every sub program your main programs run.
Then I'd just take a snapshot, and research on the web each one that isn't a
system program or an unknown.
90% of the time if you enter a programs name.exe into a search engine you can
get more info than you need on what it is.
the extreme time, and nothing or something loading suggests a faulty
installation. I've spent 3 days now reinstalling my psc 1315v. 1 byte [a single
space] misread or mis written, can throw everything off. I'm guessing not all
your programs cause this. If you just did a rollback, you'll probably need to
reinstall a lot of programs. Old registry restored. Losing new registry
entries.
Why would this be happening. Super fast hard drives, running other programs
while installing a new program. byte gets written one byte off and the entire
programs crap.
If you know it's a huge program, and 90% of the commercial ones are, I've found
the only safe way to install them is to
Start Menu->Run->Msconfig->selective startup->
disable the load startup items.
do your install, then repeat the msconfig and turn it back on to normal
startup.
They tell you right up front normally to turn off all other programs. But they
don't tell you just how or which ones must be turned off.
If you have that indexing service running, it can grab every resource whenever
it feels like it and bog everything down. Trouble is if you also turn off
services to do an install, the install program fails.
