Right click the file | Open With | Select Word. You have to have a Word
program installed on the computer, it doesn't come with the XP OS.

Wordpad should certainly be able to open *.txt and *.doc. Are you trying
to open a Wordpad doc in Notepad? or vice versa.....

Bear in mind it is not a fully functional word processor, and is limited by
the types of files (and file sizes) it can open. e.g. it may not be able to
open a Lotus Suite (word processor) file or a Word Perfect Office (word
processor) file.

I suggest using a full word processor such as MS Word or Word Perfect etc
which can open a wider variety of file formats.

The major word processing apps such as Lotus, MS Word or Wordperfect should
open just about any format including each others respective file formats.
(Word can open Lotus WP docs, Wordpefect can open MS Word docs etc).

Thank you.

The subject line mentions Notepad and Wordpad. The body of the post
mentions Word. None of the three applications you mentioned will
necessarily work correctly with the job application.

What extension does the job application/resume have?

What program was it written with?

Did you write it with software on your machine?

Note that you say "wordpad" in the subject line, but "word" here. These are
two different programs. Wordpad comes with Windows. Word is a program for
sale, either alone or as part of Microsoft Office (or Microsoft Works
*Suite*).

Any file will either not open at all or open incorrectly unless you open it
with a program that was designed to open the particular file format it's in.
The fact that it's a job application is irrelevant. What's important is what
format it's in. For advice on what program(s) can open a file, tell us what
its extension (the last three characters of its name, after the dot) is.
