not running

I reciently installed a cable modem on my system & had some trouble with the
mouse. come to find out that I needed a new one. but now something else has
surfaced.
whenever I open up a application, like the browser, I get the hourglass for
a few seconds and it just quits. It does the same thing when I shut down so I
have to cut power for it to turn off. I may be able to open a few things,
like a folder, but after a while nothing else works.
I have McAfee & I may have started the updates, but I don't think these help.
I'm very close to reinstalling XP, but I don't want to lose any files.

I'm not sure this addresses my problems. I don't think anything wrong with
the programs, more like how XP works, or in this case doesn't work, when
exicuting a application.

Joe - I don't know whether this is the answer, but that's exactly the
behaviour I experienced when trying to open my Oxford English Dictionary.
