Not Responding

This is probably a stupid issue that has been bugging me for the last two
weeks.

When I save files from either Outlook, Adobe, Word, etc. it's starting to
randomly to become non-responsive. Example:

Normally, I would save a file attachement from an email I received by just
click Save As and choose a folder I desire to save it in with no hesitation
whatsoever. Now when I click on a folder in the Save As window, it acts as
though it's not responding. Sure enough, at the top of that window it says
(Not Responding). However, after about 30 to 60 seconds, it would then open
up to that folder. Thereafter, I could open another folder without a hitch
but if I wanted to go further into the directory tree, it would do it
again...Not Responding.

Does anyone know what I am talking about? If so, what's the solution?

Note: I've updated my XP with Windows Update about that time it started
acting up. One of the update is Windows Media 11. Here's the list of my
updates in the last two weeks:

Windows XP Hewlett-Packard - Other Hardware - Officejet 6200 series

Office 2003 Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB925534) Wednesday,

Also note that I did not make any changes to my Windows XP settings other
than these two things:

In msconfig, I disabled one program called Altiris which I have no earthly
idea what's it for other than a local recovery program. And in Outlock, I've
added "Junk E-mail" to my Favorites Folder.

I'm baffled.

I don't know how to get rid of the delay, but "not responding" is a serious
misnomer: It really means it's not responding "for the time being".
Sometimes it's permanent, but usually it's not; waiting will let the task
finish. I assume you have SP2 loaded?

Does anyone know? Update: I do believe I have narrowed it down to Outlook
2003. When Oulook is not open, all seems to be working fine. However, when I
open it up again and try to save into or open up a folder through Outlook,
Word and Adobe, it hangs and says "Not Responding" for about 30-60 seconds
and it does it randomly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well.... I use Outlook 2003 too. I find that I can read email while doing a
send/receive for 3 email accounts. However, if I click a link or open an
attachment during that time, Outlook rolls over and dies with the "not
responding" message. If I wait until the send/receive completes, I can do
those "extras" without killing Outlook.

I don't know if this is an Outlook 2003 bug or if it's due to the rather
large .PST file that I have. Since the workaround is successful, I use it
instead of looking into the problem more deeply.

You might want to post in one of the Outlook newsgroups to see if they can
add any insight or have a solution for you.

I just did myself a major favor and uninstalled 7 and went back to 6. Now
those pages that were not responding load with no problem.

<snip>

At www.sysinternals.com there was a freeware utility called filemon. I
assume it's still there, although the owners of sysinternals have merged
their company with Microsoft.

Filemon tracks file accesses, and puts timestamps on them. You should,
using filemon, be able to get a sense of where your computer is "going" when
it's off in its 'non-responsive' state.
