Not Read only shared directory shows as read only

I have a Windows 2000 Domain controller, with SP4. On it I have a directory,
on which I have given full permissions to the administrators group and one
other group only. The same directory is shared to administrators and that
group only. The directory is NOT set to be read only.

All clients on the network are Windows XP pro with SP2.

Whenever a user tries to access the files in the shared directory from XP
pro worklstation, and open a file- the file shows as read only and it opens
very slow. Later they cannot save the changes because it’s read only. The
files themselves are not read only, I have checked them on the server. The
users belong to the group and have both full file access permissions and full
sharing permissions.

I have disabled the Windows Firewall on XP machines and temporary
uninstalled the antivirus software for testing purposes. But the files are
still showing as read only and open up very slow.

Please help.

Bill,

Thanks for the link. It seems this is exactly the problem I am having.

However, they claim the problem should be fixed with the latest service
packs. I have the latest service packs both for Xp Pro workstations and for
W2k Server/domain controller. The problem is still there.

Should I re-install the service packs?
Please help.

Microsoft claims the problem has been fixed with the SP2, but I am still
encountering the problem. I have done the following things to fix the issue:

1. I have re-installed the SP 2 on all XP Pro workstations and SP 4 on the
Windows 2000 Server Domain controller.

2. I have set Windows to Windows Classic folder as it suggests in Article ID
: 328170

3. I have renamed the following value in Regustry, as it suggests in Article
ID : 328170

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\Shellex\ColumnHandlers\{24F14F01-7B1C-11d1-838f-0000F80461CF}
Use the following key instead:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\Shellex\ColumnHandlers\{24F14F01-7B1C-11d1-838f-0000F80461CF}-disable

None of those things helped.
Please help.
