Not enough virtual memory

A

Adrian

Hi,
I just bought a new software game, when I run it, there's an error message
pop up and say
"not enough virtual memory." Is that because I don't have enough RAM?
I've tried to set the virtual memory to higher level, but still not
working.... If I upgrade my RAM, will it work?
Also, what would happen if I set my virtual memory higher than
recommended? will there be any side effects?

Thanks.

What is the name of the software game?

Hope this helps.

Possibly eg it could be an incorrect error message and actually mean
real ram not virtual ram. How much ram do you have and how much ram does
the game say it needs?

It's generally on side of the box if you bought retail or on the site
you downloaded it from. Heck, some games required at least 100 megs ram
over five years ago.

You need an adequate amount of RAM, 64 MB of RAM will allow
Windows XP to run like cold grease. To run a game you need
256 or 512 MB of RAM. You may also need 64 MB or more of
VRAM (video card memory). Virtual memory is also required
by some games so they can swap pages as needed. If you have
enough RAM installed, you may not actually use the VM at
all, but the program may still expect to see the memory
reserved.

see http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm for more info.

So, is the "Not enough virtual memory" pointing to not enough RAM or not
enough Video card memory? How should I solve the problem? Should I upgrade
my RAM or my Video card?

Depends on how much RAM you have; but if it is giving that message and
you have plenty of VM as maximum size (say 500 MB or more), it suggests
a badly written piece of software - possibly one that is trying to use
the page file directly. If you adjust the size of the page file, make
sure you click the Set button before going on. See my page
www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm both on what size of page file, and for
possible troubles in the Problems section.

That is an absolute minimum to get XP even to load, let alone run
serious software. It is described as being 'restricted'. Even the
officially recommended 128MB is not really enough. And the VM settings
provided for 64 MB will quite certainly be totally inadequate, Try an
initial size of 400 MB and maximum 800, and at that expect a great deal
of disk thrashing and poor performance

It is pointing to the settings for the HARD DRIVE.

You were not clear on how much RAM [those chips on a stick]
or what type and size video card you have, so whether you
need to buy something cannot be answered without knowing
what you presently have and what games you want to play.
Managing virtual memory is explained in the article that you
seem to not have read, http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm
