Not Enough USB Bandwidth?

Put the PC to sleep last nite (S3).

Woke it up this morning and there was a dialog like this:

-------------------------------------------------------
Not Enough Bandwidth

THere is insufficient USB bandwidth to perform your
request. Pleas disconnect one or more USB devices
and try again.

** For more information, refer to the Troubleshooting
chapter of the User's Guide on the installation CD
-------------------------------------------------------

The only two applications that I can think of as sources
are Forte's Agent (NG/email), which appeared tb locked
up completely - unable to even close it - and a little
file-based backup utility called SecondCopy which runs
itself automatically every so often. SecondCopy's icon
in the system tray spins while it's running and it was
frozen in mid spin.

TaskManagere could not be started.

In the end, I gave it the three-finger salute.

Anybody been here?

Woke up this mornig'...sounds like the intro to any blues song.
Anyway, there's been a whole slew of USB system updates since SP2 was
released but I'm not 100% sure if they'll help in terms of fixing
bandwidth. Are your USB ports pretty loaded up? How old is the
motherboard and how many ports does it have? Any USB hubs?

Some KB articles that are related to USB are:

1. KB924941
2. KB887173
3. KB901122
4. KB914015
5. KB935708
6. KB940514

8. KB943198

I'm pretty heavy on USB connections.

Asus P4P80-E motherboard with two dedicated USB cards.

I don't use the MB's USB ports.

Each card has 5 ports and they're both fully-used, albeit not by
that many active devices.

Also, one card supports four ports on the front of the PC. Dunno
if that qualifies as a hub or what...

Activity-wise, I have one drive that's always connected - that
gets written to by a little file-based backup utility called
SecondCopy - which is my prime suspect right now.

Another drive gets connected periodically when I want to do a
"real" backup using Retrospect.

The other ports are occupied by things like the scanner, a new
external sound card (now *there's* a candidate, right?), my
iPod's cable, Palm Pilot cradle, mouse, keyboard....and so-forth.

Thanks for the list of KB articles. I'll start working it.

No problem. You are the exception, and not the rule with that many USB
devices attached. I cannot imagine what you've got but I don't think
the USB folks had you in mind when they designed the 2.0 spec. You are
in luck though as USB 3.0 motherboards start coming out early next
year with 10x the bandwidth. You'll be good then.

Not to turn into a tarbaby on you but...

Is that to say that I should be able to locate a USB 3.0 card
too?

If so, would the 10x bandwidth be backwards-compatible with the
USB2 devices I have?

i.e. If I throw a little money as this via a couple new 3.0 cards
is there a better-than-even chance the problem will go away?

I would imagine so yes. But if you are undervolted, sour grapes.
