Not enough memory

B

Belinda Handsley

I've just started running Office 2000 Pro on a Win 98 machine. I loaded the
whole system with all features etc so that I don't have to keep putting in
the CD if I want to use a feature that isn't installed in a recommended
load.

Also two weeks ago, completely had my HD reformatted by qualified tech and
reloaded.

Prior to the HD format, I used to use Office 97Pro/Access 97.

All my 97 db's have converted up to 2000 without a drama and run
exceptionally well.

I'm building my first Access 2000 Database from scrach - love the program -
but - found that when flicking back from table to form, and in and out of
design mode and view mode on the form, about every 20 minutes I'd get
messages saying Microsoft Access can't display the page, doesn't have enough
memory etc... - the display on screen would become scrambled. After
rebooting (no other option) it would be fine again for another 20 minutes
then fall over again. Didn't loose any data or changes though. Phew!

Without thinking that it was an Access problem - I emailed the program to my
b/f to check out as he does the hardware support for the mutual client I'm
building this for - and the same thing happened on his machine. He also
runs Win 98 with Office 2000 pro. He opened the Access database from the
email and it scrambled his display and then for the next 20 minutes, all
sorts of dramas happened. He couldn't read any CD's from his CD Rom or
Burner.....his machine would lock up....drama, drama, drama.....He had to
reboot 3 or 4 times to get it right again.

All my Nortons virus definitions are up to date. So are his. I also run
Adaware. I've scanned for everything unwanted and can't find anything.

I've run Office 2000 Pro on my laptop which doesn't have the same resources
as my main machine, on Win 98 and never had an Access drama....My main
machine has 256 of RAM. P3 or 4 I think....but only 12 months old.

Any ideas or suggestions graciously appreciated before I uninstall and
reinstall Office?

One thing I am wondering about is that I used Autoformat for the form and
chose Industrial - the form and table is huge - alot of fields and heaps of
calculations in various fields. I'm wondering if the combo of alot of
fields with that background is causing the memory loss perhaps?

It took hours to build this form and I'm reluctant to change the format back
to blank before getting professional advice or opinions.

I've never built an Access 2000 db from scratch before, only 97's. The ones
on my lappy were originally built in 97 and just converted up to 2000 on the
lappy and I never had any scrambled views or trouble like this.

Any ideas appreciated.

Belinda
