Not connecting to internet

T

tmlee9300

We recently bought a computer, and it started having problems connecting to
the internet. We had the ISP change out the modem, and then had to have our
computer tech change out the network card. It was connecting to the internet
for all of about two hours, then our ISP lost service. Since the service was
reconnected, we have not been able to connect to the internet on the desktop.
Our wireless laptop gets service (and so does Xbox), but we can't figure out
why we can't get the internet on the desktop, as this is where the modem and
router are connected.

Does anyone have any idea why we could be experiencing this problem? And if
so, what we can do to fix it? It worked for four or five months until the
network card went out.

Do this both on your desktop and your laptop:
1. Click Start, then Run.
2. Type the three letters cmd
3. Press the OK button.
4. Type the following commands:
set > c:\test.txt{Enter}
ipconfig /all >> c:\test.txt{Enter}
notepad c:\test.txt{Enter}
5. Copy & paste the text you see into your reply.

In your first post you mentioned a desktop and a laptop PC. In this reply
you talk about your son's PC. Is this a third PC? does it connect to the
Internet?

About the laptop: I do need its settings. Instead of telling me that you get
an "access denied" response, you should tell me in which step you get this
response. This is why I numbered them!

The PC is my son's computer. We only have the laptop and PC. The laptop is
Vista, so I don't know if it affects the steps you mentioned.

There is a program that McAfee says is potentially harmful called PRC
Viewer, and McAfee recognizes it once in awhile and he tried to delete it. It
is attached to a user agreement for some unknown program. Do you think this
could be affecting our internet connection on the PC?

Sorry, can't tell. I do not know which program McAfee objects to and even if
I did I probably would not know. I restrict myself to the networking issues
and I will wait until you post the necessary details.
