Not all entries in Outlook contact list are shown last name first

Out of 150 or so contacts listed from the Address Book entry from the TOOLS
bar of Outlook 2007, 20 of them are listed first name first although the
remainder are shown last name first as is the selected option. The list
generated when I address an email shows the same anomaly. I've tried
manually changing the Display as but to no avail. How do I get these entries
to conform to the option setting?

No way to know until you state what setting you chose for sorting the
address book view. I suspect Outlook is doing exactly what you've told it
to.

PS the "selected option" you claim to have chosen does not exist as an
option for sorting the address book view.

Were the entries that show incorrectly imported at some point? That's the
usual culprit.

My testing indicates that the "Address Book" view uses a contact record field
named "Subject" when displaying the "NAme" field in the Address Book. This
field usually gets filled in correctly based on the "Show Names By" value in
Tools>Account Settings>Address Books tab>Change dialogue, but importing
contacts subverts this process. You can fix it by opening each contact that
displays incorrectly and changing that field on the "All Fields" page of the
contact record, using the "All Contact Fields" value in the "Select from"
drop-down. You could also write code to make the change in a more automated
fashion. There may be a tool you can buy instead. Start here:

Most of the time it's a bit simpler: I've found that users have set their
address book sort order to "File As" but do not have all their File As
fields in the order they want. This user obviously doesn't know what sort
order he is using since there is no "Last, First" sort order for the address
book view.
