Not accessible on home network

Steven

I have a home network, with 5 computers on it. Four of them can access the
shared folders on each other. The 5th one can access all the rest, but none
of the other 4 can access the 5th. When I open explorer, go to My Network
Places/entire network/microsoft windows network/mshome on any of the other 4
computers, 5 shows up, but when I click on it, I get the messege that it is
not accessible and I should check with my admin, to see if I have
permission. Can anyone tell me why this happens and how to fix it? The
install is new and it is xp pro.

Steven,

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, but there are other possibilities too. What
antivirus products do you use?

Are all of the computers running Windows XP? Details here would be very useful.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

The windows firewall is turned off and it has no other firewall, the system
is on a router and a cable modem. That unit used to have panda on it, but
that was a trial version and has since been uninstalled. All computers on
the network have static IPs. The thing is, it shows up to all other
computers and it can access them, they just cannot access it. I have tried
setting permissions, the folder is actually shared, but nothing show. Just
clicking on the computer name, as mentioned in my original post, brings up
the inaccessible messege.

OK Steven,

Did you read my articles? Plenty of folks here have your problem, and 9 of 10
of them have firewall or other security products causing the problems. We can
explore other possibilities, if you wish, but my guess is that you need to look
at your firewalls, whether active or not, whether installed or not, and look at
your antivirus products. And spend some time reading user guides.

Sup Steven:
Since you say it is a new install of XP Pro, you need to check if it is
using Simple File Sharing. If it is, you need to disable it. Here are the
steps:
1. Open up any folder
2. Tools -- Folder Options
3. Hit the View tab
4. Scroll to the bottom and uncheck "Use simple file sharing"
5. Restart and see if problem persist

Yes, I read your articales and tried to get browstat to work. I must be too
stupid, because I cannot get it to do anything.

Patience, Steven. What folder did you copy browstat.exe into?

Ok, I ran browstat status from one of the other computers and got this:

Then I ran it from the problem computer \\toby and got this:

Now, does that tell you anything useful and if so, can you now tell me how
to solve this problem?

Steven

Steven,

To start, it tells me that you have more of a problem than you hinted in your
original post. Look at your "other computer"
There are 1 servers in domain MSHOME

And look at the "problem computer"
There are 2 servers in domain MSHOME

Do you really have 5 computers? And 4 of them (including the "other computer"
as in your example above) with NO problems?

I think that you need to do some reading. Find out about things like the
browser, and address resolution.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html

Then read how (in general) to solve network problems.

Finally, read my comprehensive guide on Network Neighborhood problems.
