Not able to share files and Firewall Stopped Working

Although I have been using the Windows firewall since installing XP Pro SP2
during the summer, I have just discovered that the firewall is not actually
running. I am certain it was running in the past. I discovered this while
trying to connect my laptop to my PC on my home network via a hard-wired
router. I had set up my two computers to share data files and the printer
and this was working fine. I had not used it recently so I don't know when
the problem began. However, in trying to start my services including
firewall/ICS I get the following message

"Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Service (ICS) on
local computer

Error 1068 The dependency service or group failed to start"

I have tried looking into the properties of the firewall/ICS under the
"Services" area and the only thing that seems to be a problem is the
Dependencies tab. When selecting this tab I get this error message:

"Win32 The dependency service or group failed to start."

I checked but did not see a service for Dependencies. Do I need to repair
my installation or is there a way to fix this issue?

I am running a Dell dimension, P4, 2.4 MHZ, 768 MB of RAM, with Win XP Pro.
No software firewall but using McAffee enterprise.

Any help would be appreciated.

Start the Services wizard (Start - Run - "services.msc"). Look at "Windows
Firewall / ...(ICS)". Look at the Dependencies tab. There you find a list of
services that this service depends upon, and services that depend upon this
service. One of the services that "WF..." depends upon is not running.

Thanks Chuck,

I meant so explain that I could not get the dependencies to appear because I
received a win32 error message. I since researched the Error 1068 and ran
the configuration utility, where I found two services that I probably
stopped before. The error identified some that I reselected to run and was
able to activate the firewall again. Hopefully, the other helpful messages
in this group will help me in case I can't share my printer and files again.
Thanks very much!
