not a valid add-in

Ada Pan [MSFT]

Hello customer,

According to the error message, I would suggest that we try the following
steps to check the effect.

Step 1: Remove add-in related registry keys
============================
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall Windows. Microsoft cannot guarantee that
problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved.
Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

1. Click Start->Run. Type "regedit" in the Run box and click OK.
2. Locate the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\EXCHANGE\CLIENT\EXTENSIONS

3. Right click on the EXTENSIONS key and export it to back up
4. Delete all sub registries under the EXTENSIONS registry.
5. Backup the following registry using the same step and delete the sub
keys under it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Addins
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Addins

6. On the Registry menu, click Exit.

Please check whether the issue occurs. If it still persists, please go on
to try the other steps:

Step 2: Create a new profile
=========================
I suggest that we create a new Outlook profile to see if the problem is
related to the corrupt profile of Outlook. Creating a new profile will not
do any damage to the old profile. Please refer to the following article to
create a new profile in Outlook.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829918

195723 How to create a new personal folder (.pst) file for an Internet Mail
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=195723

Step 3: Clean Boot
==========================
I suggest you boot the machine into Clean Boot environment to see if it
occurs.

1. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
2. In the Startup tab, click the "Disable All" button.
3. In the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" checkbox,
and then click the "Disable All" button.
4. Click OK and restart your computer.
5. Check the issue.

For more information about clean boot, please refer to the article below.

If the issue persists, please help to collect the following information for
my further research:

1. Please take a screen shot of the error message you receive, save it as a
.jpg file and attach it to your reply or send to (e-mail address removed) for
research.
2. Has the problem ever worked? If so, what has changed?
3. Have you updated Windows and Office 2003 to the latest versions? Please
visit the following links to check it.

-Windows updates
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

- Office updates
Please visit the following link and then click Check for Updates in the
middle top of the webpage.

Hope this helps. If there is any update, please feel free to get in touch!

it's caused by an addin that is set in the registry but not installed.
http://www.slipstick.com/problems/addin.htm

also look for errant addins listed at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins and change the
load behavior to 0.

i dont have an add-in in both keys (ie Addins is empty)

i get the same error when i click on com addins
(in outlook/options/other/advanced/comm add ins)

then com addins opens and is empty
