Preface this by saying I hate Norton.

I was at a client's house yesterday doing some unrelated cabling when I hear
the owner screaming and pounding his desk.

He download Norton upgrade and installed it (I wish he had said something to
me before he did so).

Anyway, after paying and installing the upgrade, every single Icon and link
to programs were wiped out. Not just icons, no program would start even from
All Programs. Uh-oh. Told him..no problem just go back to a Restore Point.
UH? How do you get there if no shortcuts work? Is there a command line
method? I couldn't remember. I had to leave him tearing his hair out...it
wasn't pretty.

1. Could he do Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the Task Manager? If yes, then new task
and run cmd and then:
c:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe [enter]

2. If that didn't work, I would try Safe Mode.
3. If Safe Mode didn't work, then Safe Mode Command Prompt and:
c:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Yes, this was what I was looking for! Thanks...under the pressure of the
moment, World Cup and him throwing things around the room (almost the
computer) - I couldn't remember the command line.

Thanks ! I'm gonna keep this post.

At this point the most effective use of the client's time would be to set
the primary HDD as a slave, install a new HDD, re-install Windows and then
extract whatever data is salvagable from the old HDD.

Sometimes it just isnt worth the fight.
