Norton System Works Antivirus uninstall breaks network connection

I have decided to go to different antivirus software because of the
significant increase in Symantec's resubscription price.
The add/remove of the antivirus breaks the network connection - it times out
without connecting. I recall vaguely that it sets up a proxy server to do
it's job, but it obviously does not return network settings to their
original state on uninstall. It seems to me that there was a simple fix that
I can't remember or find. I have tried Google, Symantec support site where
they explain how to remove manually, but that's not my problem, it's what
happens afterwards. I've tried networking newsgroups with no luck.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

System - WIN XP(SP1) Home all fixes applied, Linksys router firmware
version 1.46.02, cable ISP.

| the netsh command in SP2 can rebuild the Winsock catalog. Open the command
prompt and type:

| netsh winsock reset

| then press ENTER.
