norton av 2006

i downloaded and installed nav2006 from a p2p network some time ago and it
worked well for a while (as far as my limited understand could discern). the
subscription expired two months ago and i went to the p2p to download any
updated virus definitions for nav i could find. with every download i tried
my system was hit with dozens of worms and trojans. i have an outdated
mcafee prog as well as an updated spybot s&d. i fiddled with these to get my
system back to speed. my question is-- is there anyway to get updated virus
defs for nav? i cant spring for the subscription renewal. it took me forever
to get nav2006 to run halfway decently and i dont want to have to hassle with
uninstalling and installing another program.

thanks mike

No we're not going to help you steal software. It'd be even funnier if
Symantec (as much as I despise them) monitored these groups, tracked your IP
address, contacted your ISP with a warrant for your information, and pressed
charges but they probably won't. In the mean time there's plenty of freeware
solutions that work just well for millions of folks. Give 'em a shot -
besides, friends don't let friends use Norton.

My advice is to uninstall Norton immediately then Google for free antivirus
software. Or try here: http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/

It is considered imprudent to have two fully installed
anti virus applications installed at the same time.
-
Do not run more than one real-time anti-virus scanning engine!
Ensure that the automatic update facility is engaged only for
the real-time scanning engine. Also, if you decide downloading one
of the above av applications disable the e-mail scanning function
during installation as it provides no additional protection.
In fact, most of experts believe that scanning incoming and outgoing
mail causes e-mail file corruption.

The effectiveness of an individual AV scanners can be wide-ranging and
oftentimes a collection of AV scanners is best. There isn't one software
that cleans and immunizes you against everything. That's why you need
multiple products to do the job i.e. overlap their coverage - one may catch
what another may miss.
Be sure to keep the on-demand av scanner(s) (manually) updated on a daily
basis) and perform a full scan weekly with alternate scanning engines.
