Normal.dot

More challenges! Something's corrupted this file and has caused my header
and footer info to default to bold/italic with font Arial 12. No bold or
italic should appear (and hadn't before). Given a choice, I would change the
default font size to 8 as well. I have followed past postings and properly
opened normal.dot after doing searches to confirm its location and have
processed/saved the changes that I wanted. I've even re-searched and deleted
other references to normal.dot after having made changes to try and ensure
that the system would not be confused. I have rebooted after doing this and
still come back to find the freaking bold/italic bs! This is nuts......can
someone suggest/fill me in on what steps I'm missing in trying to get this
done? Thank you in advance.....Jeff Lynch

Hello Cindy:

Word 2003 SP3.

I didn't knowingly make any changes and that's part of the point here.....I
don't even know how this started....all I know is that I recently noticed the
activity as I routinely go to view header and footer and add the file
name/path option to the footer of documents I create. I will try the option
of opening the style section and seeing whether this is an issue.

The real question and point here for me, however, was the reaction by the
system to the changing of normal.dot. I had searched/found/opening it
properly, made changes to both header/footer areas-clearing the incorrect
bold/italic settings, dumping all other references to normal.dot after saving
it with the corrections and then rebooting to make sure everything had
cleared out after emptying the recycle bin.

The issue was that the very next blank document came up just as before
changing normal.dot. That is what I didn't/don't get. It's like something
else is over-riding the settings in normal.dot. That just doesn't make sense
to me.

Thanks for responding.

Cindy:

Just as a follow-up FYI....sometimes the best solutions end up being the
easiest. After messing some more with it just now after being tied up for a
month, I simply decided to trash the normal and normal.old I had. Sure
enough, on the next start of Word, it re-created a normal that got rid of the
issue.

Done.
