normal.dot

This has been an ongoing problem...my normal.dot template keeps changing - or
something makes it appear to be changing. When I open Word 2003 the "normal"
formating is gone and the curser starts at the verty top edge of the
document. I have tried to do a search on normal.dot and when I do I get a
template that looks fine. I go through the process of renaming it, exiting
search and opening word again and I have the cursor at the top. Also, the
reminder to save normal.dot in options is unchecked but I still get asked if
I want to save it. Does anyone have an idea of how I can at least restore
the normal.dot template so IT controls how a document opens? Next question,
is it possible to change the normal.dot formating and font so that the new
choices become the "normal"? Thanks.
