Nonfunctional IE link...is there a bypass or fix?

I'm currently having a problem with IE, both from the desktop shortcut and
from the start menu link. Currently I'm accessing this site through a
workaround out of Outlook Express.

(I'm running IE6 on a WinXP Home Edition with the SP2 updates)

The short version: I was hit by the Trojan.Elitebar virus three days ago,
and my browser was swamped by adware and popups to the point where IE was
useless. My XP firewall was active, but didn't do a thing to slow the garbage
down. After several hours of safemode startups, adware scanning, virus
scanning and deletion, and manual cleaning of programs from the programs file
and through searching for and deleting every program that newly-installed
Zone Alarm and BHOdemon 2.0 flagged, I thought I had the problem solved.

But whenever I try to launch IE, I get an error report. If I leave the
failed and empty browser window open, nothing happens and the report will not
send. If I close the window and send the error report, a functional IE
browser window opens to Error Reporting site. (?) I followed all the
instructions on the Microsoft site--downloading Hotfixes to XP 2,
reconfiguring IE settings, disabling 3rd party browser add-on software. I've
done everything but uninstall IE (don't want to if I don't have to) and
reinstall--already have a downloaded copy from Mirrorplanet in reserve if
that's the case.

As I noted in the first part of this, I'm accessing the net through an
e-mail browser link in OE. Anyone have any ideas about what settings in my
original IE link may have been corrupted, or a way to change the desktop
launcher to match the settings currently fully functional from Outlook
Express? The workaround works, obviously, but I'd like to have whatever was
messed up repaired.

Don, thanks. I'll get back to you and let you know if it works.

Hi,
You probably have files/problems left by the malware infestation.

Start at
http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=4075 Then go to
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm Work through the preliminary cleaning
steps then post a HijackThis log to the forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30

Be patient. It's a busy forum.
