Non-Techie Needs Advice

I was wondering if you young techies can lend
me a hand with a video card.

My wife is going to buy me the ATI 9600XT
All-In-Wonder card.

We want to use it to record short AVI files
of our grandchildren to send to relatives
over the I'net.

Is this a good capture card and is there any
software I can buy that will make it easier
and record better ????

I have:
512mb mem
533Mhz FSB

I appreciate any and all help... thanks.

It will work, but if that's the only reason you're getting it it's an
expensive solution. What kind of camera do you have? If it's digital then
using a Firewire port will give you much better results. If it's analog
then one of the inexpensive boards that uses the Philips chips should do
fine--Compro is one brand that seems to work well.

As for software, there are a bunch of video editing packages. If you're
running XP then try Windows Movie Maker and if that doesn't do the job for
you then you should have a better idea of what you need.

Are you filming with analog or digital video? That's the first question
before anyone should advise you further.

I'm connecting my analog camcorder to the card
using the S-connector.

In my opinion it's not a good capture card, although it will cerainly
work. I just don't feel that either the quality of the capture or the
ease of use is all that great.

The best capture device that I have used (and I've used quite a few), by
far, is a Sony Digital-8 camcorder with the internal conversion feature
(most, but not all of the Sony Hi-8 camcorders have this feature).
Basically, you either play an analog 8mm or Hi-8 tape, or feed analog
video (either S-Video or composite) and sound into it (as if you were
going to make a dub ... which you can do, but you don't have to), and
the camcorder delivers the video (with sound) already converted to
digital format via it's firewire digital output. The actual capture is
done by almost any video editing or DVD authoring program (if you don't
have any, you can use Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2, which is a free
download for XP).

However, I LOVE being able to watch TV on my computer, and would never
give up my all-in-Wonder card, which I think is great. But I don't use
it for analog video capture.

Oh well, it's fixed now.

To be honest I never got good results with my AIW's (64mb and 8500DV) my old
Matrox Mystique and Rainbow Runner did the job a lot better.
I am using the Hauppage PVR250 which is excellent for capturing Video both
TV and Cam Hi8

My AIW 9000PRO has done a good job over the past few years at capturing from
analogue (Sony Hi8) camcorder, from VHS, and recording live TV to HDD.

But I wish I had bought separate capture and graphics cards, as faster
Radeons are quite cheap, but AIWs are not. The graphics needs upgrading more
often than the capture, and can't unbundle them now!

There's some good guidance here:

I have had excellent results with my AIW 9600 Radeon Pro fro capturing. I
just use the ATI MMC software and capture in mpg format.

Thanks all for the good advice.
I'm now looking at a dedicated video capture
card to reside with my "ok" video card.

Many thanks to all.

In hindsight I should have picked the PVR350 with built in encoder as well
as decoder..
