NOD32 Needs Help?

J

I've been running ESET's NOD32 on my Windows XP Professional system for
about four months. Last week was my first reported incident. I was using the
arrow key to tab down the list of "junk" mail in my Hotmail box. I use the
Preview window in Outlook Express 6 but open very few messages. When I came
to one entry, my NOD32 software triggered a warning and told me it moved
quarantined the item. Being very green with handing such incidents (never
handled one in my life) I read what I could and decided to execise the
option to send ESET the file (message, report, whatever they have wired to
receive) and get their advice.

That was a week ago. I'm still horsing around via email with Beijing or
Mumbai. The last message just came in and I'm being instructed to run
someone else's diagnostic software and send ESET the results.

Or. I'm connected to a source that isn't ESET, or.

I'm dealing with someone who's a little short in the diagnostics department
of the company s/he works for. Her's the sites I've been told to go to get
the software:

http://www.mmdirect.de/downloads/hijackthis_199.zip

download and run Autoruns software,
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

Then I'm told: "After that go to the "Everything" tab., then go to menu and
save a log file. After that send me the log attached."

Does this look legit to you?

Is it safe to do as requested?

It's hard to believe I paid for a two year subscription with this outfit
then find myself waiting for a full week just to get an answer on whether or
not I should delete a file. They said it looks harmless but they want this
additional info. Now I'm suspicious. When the doctor sends me to the library
to look up something and bring him a Zerox. I gotta' at least raise an
eyebrow.

Uncheck "Show Preview Pane"

Get a modern, secure email client.

I just use it for hotmail and reading newsgroups. My main email client is
Outlook which I don't want ot leave. Giving up hotmail is no issue but I
need something to read the handfull of newsgroups I';m interested in.
Thunderbird doesn't do that, does it?

Check that last comment, Beau. I just read more on Thunderbird. Looks like I
should give that a try.

Thunderbird is probably the best replacement for Outlook Express, for
most users. I see you've discovered it does do News.

When you install it, it will import all your mail and mail account
settings, but not the news settings (unless they have changed the
installer recently). You would have to set up your News account
manually, using the same parameters as in OE. Not a big deal...

can Thunderbird also import all of my email addresses from OE?
If it can't, I won't switch.

thunderbird reads pop3 email, thunderbird reads imap email, thunderbird
(with appropriate extensions) reads webmail like hotmail/gmail/yahoo
mail/etc, thunderbird reads newsgroups, thunderbird even reads rss feeds...

the only thing thunderbird doesn't do is ms exchange server (and then
only when ms exchange server's support for pop3 is turned off)...

Those would be your "mail account settings".

S'far as I know, this applies to all the Mozilla-flavor mail programs. I
installed both Firefox/Thunderbird or SeaMonkey on a couple of friends'
boxen a few months ago, and chose the option to suck all from OE.

I _think_ you can only do this on the initial install; un- and
re-install may not offer this again. Pay attention to the choices when
you install it.

Unless you meant "Address Book" ? Yes, it imported those as well.

Ignore them. Those who recommend replacing OE aren't able to use the common
sense god <should have> gave them to avoid getting infected.

one piece of common sense suggests that if you want to avoid getting
infected you should try using a less vulnerable app...

With email addresses I meant "address book", yes, you're right
Beauregard.
Thanks for your reply, I'll give TBird a chance.

Ride carefully :)
