NOD32, Kaspersky, e-trust, or Avast?

Wilbur Post

I've been using Avast and it's shields, but after reading the test results
at AV-Comparatives, I'm worried about using Avast.

I can get a free version of e-trust, but I can't find any test results for
it. I see that NOD32 and Kaspersky consistently score the highest (along
with Norton). I would use Norton as a last resort as it slows down the
computer and Symantec insinuates itself all over the registry.

Go with kaspersky or NOD32 then :)

I have eTrust on my wife's system for about a year now and it has kept
the machine clean. Not too hard on resources either. It is the suite
version including a spam filter for Outlook/OE and PestPatrol.

Yes, but what exactly is it cleaning on your wife's computer? Women
don't seem to surf the same parts of the net that men do (if you know
what I mean - wink wink)

It could be that your wife just uses e-mail and reads only the most
sedate of web sites, while many men go for the gusto and really go where
no man has gone before (in the last 10 seconds anyway). Most of the,
shall we say, more salacious sites, carry the most trojans and spyware.
Usually the trojans are benign, but they still have to be cleaned.

I, too have rarely seen an "e-trust" test and would like to know if it's
any good when really put through the rigors of the net.

ROFL!! That is because we are *more evolved*, wink wink!! Still giggling
here, but I have used EZ Trust for at least 5 years and I haven't gotten
into trouble yet on those salacious sites (note to self.....look up what
those are).....LOL.

NOD32 & Kaspersky are by far the best. Of the Two - I had Kaspersky on my
system, but could not live with the system resources it used.

NOD32 (latest version) is just as good as Kaspersky (IMHO), but uses less
system resources

Kaspersky's Trojan detection is where it beats NOD32 and any other AV out
there.

We're making light of this, but its a valid point - the more
'responsibly, cautiously, or sanely' you use the net, the more secure
you are before you factor in antivirus. Safe HEX rules!

Fair to say that, at the school, we have far fewer virus alerts
triggered by the girls than the boys....

I use Mwav [eScan AntiVirus Toolkit Utility, Version 4.4.7. I got
curious about this thread as I'm thinking of adding NOD32 to my
AV collection. I went to alt.cracks and quickly found a trojan I
could test. Results:

Kas-Mwav detected it
F-Prot for DOS detected it
BitDefender8 missed it
EzTrust missed it

Kinda proves your point. Still debating whether I would get any
benefit out of having NOD32, but the more the merry, I guess. I
used to have 7 AVs but since I found occasions where all 7 missed
a new one I cut back. Am sending the trojan to BD & EZ.

You should submit that Trojan to those AV vendors that did NOT recognize it.

how did you know what file had a trojan in alt.cracks (or do all of them
have one!?) Some have said that most of the keygens aren't a problem as
long as you make sure you don't download an exe file that's not zipped.

It doesn't take long before comments appear advising of its true
contents. That's faster than dling them when you'll settle for
anything, for testing purposes.

And I am subscribed only for that reason. My file mgr, newsreader,
uninstaller, AV, etc, are all bought and paid for.

I guess I am too old for that stuff, lol. But I have to agree with you. I
often clean up friends' computers and it amazes me what is on there that
they never dream anyone would find out about. Particularly the *pentacostal
church-goer* next door!! (VBG) Naughty!!
