No way to use calling card rules in Win2K3 Server?

B

Bill Bartlett

It appears that there is no way to use calling card rules in the Fax Service
provided with Windows Server 2003 -- is this correct? From the KB and
newsgroups postings, it seems that the calling card rules are only applied
at the user level, and since the Fax service in Win2K3 must run under a
service account, the calling card rules are never applied. If this is
indeed correct, is there any way to get around this? (Brute-forcing entries
into the \HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT section of the registry, etc etc ?)

We have at least one customer who _cannot_ get an outside line without
appending his PIN after a pause after the phone number, so if we cannot get
the calling card rules to be used, he won't be able to use our software
until we can write a replacement for the Windows "Dialing Rules" function.

I tried it on Win2k3 and I was able to send a fax by applying the dialing
rules.
The steps i followed are

1. Go to Control Panel
2. Phone and Modem Options -> Dialing Rules -> New
3. Location Name= "test"
4. Region: India Area Code 91
5. To access an outside line to make long distance call "9,"
6. Calling Card "MCI via 1-800-674-0700"
7. Enter account name and PIN say "12345"
8. Save it.

1. Go to fax console
2. New fax
3. To: "abc"
4. Location "India (91)"
5. Fax Number "40" and "31123456"
6. Use dialing rules "test"
7. Click next Select a cover page and send.

If you want to use a contact from address book:
The contact shud have a fax number in the format (40) 31123456.
Also, select location and dialing rules check box on the Send fax wizard.

Hope this works. Do let me know incase of any issues.

I have question relating to this.
I set dial rule for area code and prefix (dial 9 for outgoing fax) in the
win 2003 server. I also set the same rule in my XP client.
When I select fax recipient from Outlook contact (business fax), the rule
doesn't work at all.
What's the correct setup too use Outlook contact for faxing?
Thanks

Most probable reason is the number is not in canonical format. Please copy
paste the number as it appears in your address book & we can tell you if
it's canonical or not.

Another possibility could be this - if your calling card has credit card or
PIN information associated with it, the translated number is not displayed
in any UIs for security reasons. So even if the UIs show the number as it
appears in address book, the number dialed will be with the rule applied.

Here's the fax number appears in my Contact:
(661) 393-8738

By the way, I'm talking about regular dial up with dial prefix set in dial
rule, not credit card dialing.

Thanks

The number is not in canonical format & hence dialing rules are not applied.
Look at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/tapi/tapi3/address_ovr.asp?frame=true#canonical_addresses
for details about the format. Go to section 'Canonical Addresses' if your
browser doesn't automatically take you to that section.
