No System Restore and other problems

Bill Sharpe

I had a problem with my HP Wireless keyboard. The buttons tab on the
keyboard applet had disappeared. I tried reinstalling the HP driver with
no success. Then I did a system restore, which took my system back two
days successfully.

However, now I can no longer run system restore at all. Either nothing
happens or I get a blank restore window. I can't run it in Safe mode or
from the Safe Mode command prompt. In addition, Help and Support will
not display at all.

I have gone to the systems applet and turned off System Restore, then
turned it back on with no luck either.

And, of course, I still don't have a buttons tab on my keyboard properties.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Hi

Try reinstalling System Restore. Open Windows Explorer and go to the
windows\inf folder. In the right hand pane find sr.inf, right click it and
select Install.

Try the following link to Kelly's web site:

"Why doesn't Help and Support work?"

Thanks for the quick response. I tried reinstalling System Restore and
got the following message: The file sr.sys on Windows xP Home Edition
SP2 is needed. Insert the CD or type the location of the file.

I have an HP Pavilion with XP Home SP2 originally installed but of
course I have no XP CD, only a restore disk that gets me back to the
original installation and wipes out everything else installed. I was
able to locate sr.sys on my hard disk and the other files the
installation was looking for, but the installation was not successful.
The sr.sys file was dated 8/7/2004, which is well before SP2.

I have not checked all of Kelly's suggestions yet for Help and Support.
I need to install WSH to try the script he mentions. Running helpctr
-regserver doesn't seem to do anything.

No, I found sr.inf. Right-clicking on sr.inf brought up an Install
window where I was asked to locate sr.sys and other files. I located
them and finished the install, but still no System Restore.

However, your reference to Kelly's VBS script did fix Help and Support.
And after running the script not only did Help and Support again work,
so did System Restore. Go figure!

I will now check with HP on getting the Buttons tab back on the Keyboard
properties window.

Thank you for your help! These MS forums are great.
