No Start Bar or Desktop Icons

Bob

I get no start bar or desktop icons after booting up to
the users page.

After selecting user, i get a background screen and no
icons or start bar.

I am able to get desktop icons in Safemode

sometimes when shutting down the computer the icons and
start bar will return and be visible during the shutdown
process.

Any ideas where to look to fix this problem.

System Restore has no effect

I have run virus scans and nothing shows up to fix this
problem.

It's been about a week and it's driving my nuts.

I can CTRL-ALT-DEL to get the task manager box up and
access programs that way, but I want my desktop back.

Thanks for any help, Bob

Install xp cd,exit the info page, then go to run, type:cmd In cmd
type:Sfc /Scannow When the graph is thru type:CHKDSK C: /F
Agree to restart, then type:EXIT Restart computer, also, run the DOS
window in min.,sometimes the graph runs behind it.This is the fix for
that problem, however if it doesnt repair the desktop (user account),then
the account is corrupt, create a new one thru safe-mode (ADM.).

Ok I tried that chkdsk and it didn't fix the problem.

I also tried setting up a new user account and still no
desktop icons or start bar. Where does the program get
it 's info from for the desktop user settings?

I read somewhere that it could be a missing shdocvw.dll
file, but I had that and it also had a shdocvw.bak file.
I swapped these (through rename file) and still no luck.

The computer boots to the welcome screen with user names,
but i have to use the windows task manager to access any
programs, I can not get my desk top up.

Any other ideas out there? I'm saving a XP system reload
until the last resort.

In Task Manager's Process list is there a process called explorer. If so terminate it and type explorer in File - Run in Task Manager.

Yes!!!! That did it for now.

Hopefully the desktop will work when I reboot.

If not at least I have a way to get my desktop working,
with an extra step.

Thanks David
