I just bought this HP computer from sister and she says for as long as she
has had it. I do not have any software and windows 2000 is installed with
service pack 4. I am completely computer illiterate and have no idea how to
get the sound to work. Every volume controll is frozen and does not allow you
to do anything with it. Can someone please help???

If you're completely computer illiterate then your best bet is to ask a
computer-savvy friend to assist you.

When buttons are 'frozen' like that, you will also notice that they
are less distinct in color or focus.

this is called 'greyed out'. Means they are inactive for some reason;
in your case, the software for the sound hardware, or even sound
hardware (expansion card) in the PC is defective, disabled...etc.

Yes, go to a friend for fix and tutorials.

Go to http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html
and download the drivers for the sound device.
