no sound

Hi I have Windows XP Pro SP2 and although I get sound when I play games
there is no Windows sound scheme. When I go to control panel / sounds and
audio devices/in the sound tab it says Sound scheme: Windows Default Scheme,
there is no entries in the Program events: it is blank and I don't get any
windows sounds. And yet I get sounds using my sound card software Realtek
AC97 Audio. Presumably something has been deleted/removed. But what?
Thanks for any help Tracy

It would help if you could post what were you doing just before you
started having that problem? what happens If you choose a different
sound scheme or if you choose a program event and click the browse
buttom and choose a sound.

There is no sound scheme. There is no option to even chose an event. It is
just a blank window. It could have been like that for ages. I only noticed
it when I clicked on the sound icon in the taskbar and there was no beep.
Then I noticed that there were no sounds and when I investigated there was
no sound scheme at all.

Go to "My Computer", then C drive, open up Windows folder then open up
the Media folder. Do you see any files in there?

Hi, yes, that folder has all the sound files in it.
