No Sound

Hi
My Friends PC is not outputting any sound what so ever, he doesnt know what
sound car he has as it is an on-board soundcard, I told him to download the
newest version of DirectX but this did not have any effect, I dont know
which drivers he should be downloading (if any) as I dont know which sound
card he has, when attempting to play audio files in Windows Media Player he
gets the following message;

Windows Media Player cannot play the file
because there is a problem with your sound device. There
may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it
may be in use by another program, or it may not be
functioning properly.

Any ideas how to fix this, help would be greatly appriciated.

I guess he could go to the device manager to see what is up with the sound card, might need a new one, or check in sounds and audio devices. The error message pretty much gives him his choices.

Make sure "Windows Audio" service is running and set to automatic (and
NOT disabled). You can reach it through:
Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services

Or;
Check the BIOS to make sure integrated sound is "Enabled"...Accessing the
BIOS for various MB Mfgrs.;

Also, how about this;
Control Panel, Sounds Speech and Audio Devices, Sounds and Audio
devices, Audio tab, check Sound playback, and make sure dropdown has correct
item listed; also, in that tab, under Sound playback, click "Advanced", and
make sure your speaker selection is correct for your installed speakers; and
under "Volume" tab, Device Volume, Advanced, make sure "Mute" is not
checked. Good Luck.

If the motherboard has integrated sound, he should have a motherboard cd
that contains the appropriate drivers..
