No sound - WinXP

Recently,xp installed over ME and all sound went out.
(cdrom/dvd-no sound, can read files on data cds) Vendor
gave me link for driver and worked for a while. Went out
again. Tried link again. No luck. Tried "ms
troubleshooting" cool tool but no help. Went to websites
(vendor and MS)downloaded drivers. When I go into Device
Manager (Creative Sound Blaster Audio PCI 128 (wdm)) open
sounds and audio device properties/audio the default
device for both sound playback and sound recording only
shows "modem#0 line playback" not sure what that is and
it won't allow me to change/add/delete. Also, when I go
to device manager, sound, video, & game controllers/
properties/audio devices/properties the "use audio
features on this device" is already picked but the status
says: driver is enabled but has not been started. How do
you start? Please help!. Thank you

Try booting into Safe Mode, open device manager and remove all sound cards
you can find, reboot and see if Windows can redetect the sound card and
install the drivers.
