Hi,
Recently, the sound on my computer will not work.
I have onboard sound on the motherboard, which uses the AC '97 driver.
(I don't use a soundcard) The motherboard is a TYAN 2400 (S2257)
I get this error when trying to open volume control:
"There are no active mixer devices available. You may install mixer devices
from the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard in the Control Panel."
Tried that - didn't work.
I have many devices under the sound, video and game controllers.
These are listed under 'Legacy audio drivers'
I have tried disabling the driver in BIOS then uninstalling the drivers.
Though Device Manager will not let me uninstall the Legacy audio drivers.
Occasionally this driver appears in Device Manager.:
AC'97 Driver for Intel® 82801aa Controller
(This happened once when I tried to fix the problem by repairing the
installation of win2000 using the win2000 pro CD)
and the sound will work until i switch off or reboot the computer and then
it is lost again!
I have tried using the driver CD that came with the motherboard, though this
does not seem to help with my current configuration and OS, I am guessing as
the driver CD is quite old now and the manufacturer has not updated the
drivers since.
I am thinking that maybe if i can delele the registry keys for the device
drivers in device manager, then maybe windows will try and find the correct
drivers from the win2000 CD (which reappeared on the re-installation). Does
anyone know where these keys are in the registry? I guess they are somewhere
in HK Local Machine\software\microsoft...
I read somewhere that Device Manager is simply a graphical program for
editing registry keys, that point to the ini files containing the drivers.
So maybe editing keys will help?
