No Sound In XP

I installed some games to an XP pro OS laptop .i
installed "conflict: desert storm" "age of empires II" and
the sound was doing great but after i install the " Mortal
Kombat 4" the sound was okay for a while. But after
shutting down the computer and rebooting there was no
sound at all . the laptop has an OS of windows Xp pro. and
the one thing i noticed when i installed the "Mortal
Kombat 4" was that the game was designed for windows
95/98 i.e the game is kinda old,the other thing was the
installer asked "if i was sure that it should store
information in the registry entry" and i said okay,i have
the game running on my win98 pc . But I supposed XP
supported backwards compatibility and was okay to install
it.
I checked everting in the device manager and checked the
drivers for the sound card. at last i reinstalled
windows xp using the recovery cd but still there is no
sound heard at all even the modem sound is not heard when
i try to connnect to the net
i have seen XP trouble shooting and everting seems to be
in place
"except messing with the BIOS settings"
The drivers and evertying are uptodate since the laptops
manufacturing date is in june 2004 the laptop is toshiba
sattelite pro if it has any relevance.
well if you have any solutions let me know ? thanks alot
in advance

Right click my Computer and select Manage
Under Services and Applications select Services
Scroll down to Windows Audio and make sure it is set to AUTOMATIC
