No sound in IE

After installing one of the countless security updates in the last 2 weeks,
the sound disappeared on Internet Explorer and Firefox. Even the click sound
when I hit the links doesn't make a sound.

My speakers are on, the volume is max,
I set the registry value for the mouse click on links.
I've updated the codecs
I've set the navigation start / navigation complete in the sounds and audio
devices properties.
I've rolled back to my earliest restore point - seems to be after the
updates :(

Any ideas? Thanks...

Does any sound (like a Wave or MP3 file) play?

Nope - nothing through IE / FireFox. If I download the file, it works. If I
try to play it through the browser, silence... In the case of videos, the
video plays, but no sound. In the case of WAV / MP3, the browser looks like
it's playing something (the scroll thing moves) but no sound.

Any other ideas? I downloaded Opera and everything worked fine... What does
Opera do that IE doesn't?

Are you using Realtek sound driver?

Do you have a sound card or use the motherboard. Also, if motherboard check
your BIOS setting.

I have a built in sound card - but which BIOS setting could affect this?
It's only browser sounds that don't seem to work...

I'm giving up. Have downloaded Opera as browser and can hear sound fine now.
On Opera, but still nothing on IE.

Try typing this on the Command Prompt:

reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32" ^
/v wavemapper /d msacm32.drv
