NO sound device detected

Hi there guyes, so i have no sound on my acer laptop, XP s2. after downoading
explorer 7 and instaling a new webcam. Tryed the most but still the sound
manager in the controlpanel cant find a sound device.
It says it cant find a device to play the sound throu, but in driver tab i
still have the RealTek AC97 installed.
Think it might be something with the startup, cause i cant really find a
start up for the sound in the msconfig. But dont know how to turn it on. Next
step is to reboot the hole thing, but would be happy for any sugestions.
Thanx.

Go ahead and reboot to see if it resolves the sound issue. If it doesn't:
Right click MyComputer.
Click Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button.
Expand "Sound, video and game controllers".

Is your audio device listed and if so does it show to have any conflicts?
Double click on the device listed to open its properties.
Does it show to be working properly?

Go to the manufacturers support site and download/install the latest updated
drivers for the device per their instructions.

I have the same problem. Under Sound, video and game controllers it
shows Audio codecs, Legacy auto drivers, Legacy Video capture devices,
Media control devices, Standard game port, and video codecs. Under Other
devices, it has Multimedia sound controller and USB controller, both
with question marks. The sound card is built in to the motherboard. Can
I install a PCI sound card to bypass the one on the Motherboard? When I
play music in Media Player, it says I have no sound device installed.
This is a fresh install of XP, SP2, on a reformatted HD. I just got the
computer, and it was working OK when my Dad last used it. Also, I can
play a DVD, but with no sound. HELP!

You checked to be sure that the sound isn't muted or turned down?
You checked the speaker connections to make sure they're plugged in securely?
You tested the speakers on a different machine to make sure they are still working?

The only issue in the BIOS would be that it could have been disabled, yet installing
software/hardware shouldn't cause that.

Boot to Safe Mode > Device Manager.
Remove any/all devices listed in Sound, video and game controllers.
Reboot and Windows will redetect/reinstall the device drivers. If you have the
option to not let Windows install the drivers, do so. Then install the new drivers
per the manufacturers instructions that you downloaded.

Please don't piggyback into a thread, also considered as hijacking, even if you
have a similar issue. Search the newsgroup first for a resolution, if you still have
the issue after reading/trying the suggested resolutions start your own new post
explaining the issue.

With that said, you do not have the drivers installed for your sound device and you
need to install them. Go to the computer or motherboard manufacturers support site
and download/install the drivers per their instructions.
If you don't know the manufacturer/make/model, download Everest Home Edition:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads9.html

http://basconotw.mvps.org/dwnlds.htm

Create a new folder named Everest and extract the contents of the download to that
folder.
Open the folder and double-click everest.exe to run the application.
Click the + next to Computer.
Click Summary.
Look in the appropriate section for the device.
Go to the manufacturers Support > Download site and download the proper drivers for
your device. As well download or print any Readme/Install file if it is available
separately, it may be included in the downloadable driver file instead of separately.
Install the drivers per the manufacturers instructions.

I apologize. I didn't know the protocol, though I should as I have been
using newsgroups for many years. As it happens, I got the CD and manual
for the motherboard and sure enough, installing the driver solved the
problem. Next time I will think before I type. <g>
