Kon nichiwa, Oh genki desuka?
My first question after reading your post is, Have your speakers ever worked in
the past or is this a recent problem? Second, are they properly plugged in?
And third, have you tested your speaker to make sure they are in working condition?
You can try a Restore of your system and go back up to 90 days. If they've never
worked it is probably you need to download updated drivers from the manufacturer's website for your soundcard. Repost with more information.

Well, only MID files and WAV files don't work.
OS: WinXP SP1 Home
Windows Media Player: 10 (could be the problem??)

This is the info given by my "C-Media 3D Audio Config" program that came with my computer:
Sound card: C-Media
+ 3D Audio: Xear #D
+ Audio CODEC: CMI9739A
+ Audio Driver Version: 5.12.01.0039.3 (36)
+ Audio Controller: VIA 3059 Series Audio Controller
+DirectX Version: 9.0b
(C-Media's website is http://cmedia.com.tw)
Hope this information helps :)

Do you both have your speakers plugged into the correct socket of your
collective sound cards ?

If thats OK, then do : Start > Control Pannel > Sounds and Audio Devices >
Volume Tab > make sure the sliders are up to max > Advanced Tab > make sure
you've got some speakers selected. If not, select some from the scroll list,
hit Apply, then OK then Apply again, if necessary, then OK again.

Also double click on the loud speaker icon in the systray (bottom right hand
side of your screen) and make sure the type of sound you're trying to play
is not muted and all the sliders are up to max.

Do you now have sound ?

No, then on we go :

Try your speakers on your friend's PC. Do they work on his/her's ?

No ? Then try a friend's speakers on your PC. Did that work ?

Yes ? Then you may have to put your hand in your pocket and fork out for new
ones.

No ? Then you'll need to re-post with more info about your sound card is.

Cheers,
Jerry

I forgot to mention that there is sound whenever I test it in the Music
Tab of Direct x Diagnostic Tools. In the Sound Tab however, the test
fails and there is a comment below as follows: DirectSound test
results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x88780078
(No driver).

Please help me.

I take it you re-installed the soundcard drivers ?

If so, and you get a DirectSound error, re-install DirectX.

Jerry
