For those of you who have been struggling and been frustrated over the
"Unspecified error" and people telling you you have to convert files and
telling you to reinstall after you've already done that a BILLION times with
no luck, then ask for help again to ONLY get the SAME answers that didn't
help the first 3 billion times....you are in luck..... If any of you have
downloaded the program "Folder Lock" which Locks folders, protects sensitive
data, ect....it WILL cause this Unspecified error. The only way to fix it is
to REMOVE the "Folder Lock" program from your computer. Once you remove it
and restart Windows Movie Maker it should work fine as it did for me. I hope
this helps alot of you with this problem as I have shared in your complete
disgust and frustration with this problem. PLEASE pass this resolution on to
all of those who have had this problem!

Thanks for that although the issue with Folder Lock has been mentioned
several times we al know that the more it is said the more likely somebody
will actually read it. But I will also add that more often than not if we
recommend converting a file it is because the file will NOT work in it's
current format. Frustrating or not it is still true.

Wojo - I didn't realise Folder Lock had been mentioned on here before so I
apologise for that. There are tons of posts here and I guess I didn't spend
long enough going through them all. I'm with you though, the more its
mentioned across the net and on help sites, the better chance more people who
do need the help get it. I'm also with you on the converting file thing...for
the most part. Like you said there are some file types that just don't work,
plain and simple. However I know when I had asked for help elsewhere about
the issue I was being told to convert my jpg files...which had worked fine
100% before the issue arrived...so I told this person this could not possibly
be the issue. They insisted I was wrong, and I stopped listening to them for
advice because they didn't want to listen to what I was saying
either.....I've seen this simular situation carry out in various forums on
this issue. My frustration was never with the fact that some file types
needed to be converted...although I can see where that would be frustrating
to some. I will admitt I was a bit too exited when I first discovered the
whole Folder Lock thing and the fact that it actually worked for me....
especially since I had been looking for an answer for over a year. Anyway,
thanks for your response, and I wish you the best.

Cheers

Oh no need to apologize at all, like I said (and you did too for that
matter) the more it is mentioned the better.
The folder lock issue is a relatively new thing to come to light so it is
especially good to mention it as much as possible.
As far as file types go I agree with you as we,, sometimes they work other
times they don't. I just didn't want your message to be read as though this
advice should be ignored or anything like that because often times it is the
correct answer. JPG's are funny animals in that respect. Some have had
issues with them and the issues were resolved by changing them to BMP's but
others, me included, have never experienced a problem with JPG's.
